Here at Connecticut Family Dentistry, we’ve seen our fair share of patients with dental anxiety. While it’s normal to have some apprehension about coming to the dentist, it should not be a completely overwhelming experience. Dental anxiety is often an excuse for patients to avoid their six month check-ups, but this can be seriously detrimental to your oral hygiene, and by extension, your overall health.
Before I worked in our Manchester family dental office, I myself experienced dental anxiety. I had a particular bad experience at a dentist office in Virginia and thus had been avoiding my regular dental appointments. It’s hard to continue to avoid your hygiene appointments when you actually work in a Manchester family dental office, so I had to bite the bullet and just do it!
Thankfully, our hygienist Liz was excellent! I felt no pain or judgement. It was refreshing to have such a calm experience and it really helped to put me at ease when I then had an exam by Dr. Dean. As it turns out, I actually needed a filling and a crown (which may have been avoided had I gotten my regular cleanings!) and was honestly a little concerned about how I would feel. Though my cleaning appointment was indeed very positive, the actual dental work made me nervous!
I can honestly say that Dr. Dean changed my whole outlook on dental visits! She was so patient and kind and was able to put me at ease. While my dental work was not yet complete, (I ended up needing a root canal…yay 🙂 ) I can say that I am definitely a changed person! My suggestion for those with dental anxiety is to find a practice where you feel comfortable to explain your anxiety and let them take it from there. An excellent practice can do wonders for you, and Connecticut Family Dentistry is that place for me!
