Gum Disease (Periodontal Disease)

Gum disease—also known as periodontal disease—is a chronic infection that affects the gums and the supporting structures of the teeth. It is estimated that up to 80% of adults have some form of gum disease, ranging from mild gingivitis to more severe periodontitis. If left untreated, periodontal disease can lead to gum recession, bone loss, and ultimately tooth loss.

At our practice, we are committed to early detection and effective treatment of gum disease. We offer comprehensive periodontal care, including customized maintenance schedules with more frequent cleanings and monitoring to help control the disease and preserve your oral health.

Scaling and Root Planing (Deep Cleaning)

When periodontal disease is diagnosed, the first line of treatment is often scaling and root planing—commonly known as a deep cleaning. This non-surgical procedure removes plaque, tartar, and bacteria from below the gumline and smooths the root surfaces to encourage reattachment of the gums to the teeth.

Scaling and root planing is typically performed under local anesthesia for comfort and is followed by a tailored maintenance plan, which may include periodontal cleanings every 3 to 4 months to prevent the disease from progressing further.

Tissue Contouring (Gum Reshaping)

For patients with uneven gum lines, excessive gum tissue (a “gummy smile”), receding gums, or gaps between the gums and teeth, tissue contouring can dramatically improve both aesthetics and health. Using advanced dental lasers, we can gently reshape the gum tissue for a more balanced, symmetrical smile.

Laser gum contouring is a minimally invasive procedure with little to no downtime, reduced bleeding, and faster healing compared to traditional methods. It is often used for cosmetic enhancement or as part of a broader periodontal treatment plan.
