Your Child’s First Dental Visit

Your child’s first tooth typically emerges between 6 to 12 months of age. Both the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and the American Academy of Pediatrics recommend that a child’s first dental visit take place within six months of the first tooth appearing, and no later than their first birthday.

This early visit is key to building a foundation for lifelong oral health. During your child’s first appointment, our dental team will:

  • Examine your child’s mouth, teeth, and gums
  • Review proper oral hygiene techniques
  • Discuss feeding and dietary habits that can affect oral health
  • Educate you on how to prevent early childhood cavities (also called “baby bottle tooth decay”)
  • Answer any questions or concerns you have as a parent or caregiver

We make every effort to ensure that your child feels safe, comfortable, and at ease. Our goal is to make dental visits a positive experience from the start!

Dental Sealants

Sealants are a fast, painless, and highly effective preventive treatment that helps protect children’s teeth from cavities. They are typically applied to the chewing surfaces of permanent molars and premolars, where deep grooves and pits are most vulnerable to plaque and bacteria.

Sealants work by creating a thin protective barrier that blocks food particles and bacteria from settling in the grooves of the teeth. While brushing and flossing are still essential, sealants can significantly reduce the risk of tooth decay during the cavity-prone years of childhood and adolescence.

Restorative Dentistry for Children

Despite our best efforts, cavities can still develop—even in baby teeth. Prompt treatment is important, as untreated decay can lead to pain, infection, and damage to developing permanent teeth. It can also affect chewing, speech development, and increase the likelihood of orthodontic needs in the future.

Our team is highly experienced in providing gentle, effective restorative care for children of all ages, including:

  • Tooth-colored fillings for cavities
  • Crowns for more severely affected teeth
  • Space maintainers if a tooth is lost early

We also offer nitrous oxide (“laughing gas”) for most children to help them feel relaxed and comfortable during treatment. Your child’s health, comfort, and safety are always our top priorities.
